NGO Mpilonhle

In January 2015, Anna Heylen travelled to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to collaborate with the NGO Mpilonhle in establishing a small local atelier. Mpilonhle, meaning 'a good life,' is a community-driven organization that supports children in overcoming health challenges and creating opportunities for a brighter future. Through mobile clinics, children are screened for various health conditions, and those living with HIV are supported with resources to manage their health effectively.

Building on the community’s strong tradition of craftsmanship, Anna Heylen partnered with local women to initiate a beading and sewing project, which enhances traditional skills while exploring innovative applications. Participants learn about material selection, durability, and product design, creating goods that can contribute to local economies. The project emphasises learning and self-expression, with each creation as a step toward economic independence and community growth.
